Setting up Backup and Restore to use PKZIP (TM)

The Backup and Restore options make use of third party software to archive the data files. By default these options use the MSDOS backup facility, but this is not included on many modern computers. One handy tool that produces very compact archives is PKZIP from PKWARE.

To use PKZIP with the Synergy DOS backup/restore option you need to use Utilities => Edit Synergy.INI to set up the following settings in the "Backup" section

BackupEXE=PKZIP
BackupParams=A:SYNERGY -& -RP SYN*.DTA HDR*.DTA *.CHK
RestoreEXE=PKUNZIP.EXE
RestoreParams=-d A:\synergy

The above will archive the data onto floppy disks on drive A:. It assumes that the PKZIP programs are available (see below) and located in a folder that is "on the path". If this isn't the case, you will need to specify the exact location of PKZIP.EXE & PKUNZIP.EXE

If you use "Pads" you may have text files too, in which case add *.TXT to the end of the BackupParams line.

You will also of course need a copy of PKZIP. We have placed a copy of the shareware DOS version on our main website for convenience. The 198KB file can be picked up from:

If you use this backup approach and find that it suits you, we strongly suggest that you register your copy of PKZIP with PKWARE. It's well worth it.
