Windows NT: Intermittent General Protection Fault (GPF) as the application is closed down, after which the application GPFs when you try to restart it

This problem only seems to affect some systems and even there is intermittent, we have not been able to establish a repeatable pattern. It has so far proven impossible to find an exact cause, but it appears to be associated with the NT 16bit Windows sub-system. What appears to happen is that part of the subsystem stalls, this then means that the next time you try to run the 16bit application you get the GPF straight away.

Solution: If you get this situation (i.e. every time you try to run the program you get a GPF):
  1. Shut down any other 16bit Windows applications.
  2. Call up the NT Task Manager
  3. Scroll down to find wowexec.exe
  4. End the wowexec.exe process.

The application should then run fine.
