Synergy folders - what is put where on your computers

When a Synergy application is installed and used it creates a number of folders in which data is stored. The exact set of folders depends on the type of installation.

N.B. The folder names are shown below in lowercase, but they may be upper case or mixed case on your computer - the difference is not relevant.

Server or Stand-alone

On a typical Server or Stand-alone installation of Synergy the folder structure is as follows:

    ../skyewright/programs/
    ../skyewright/system/
    ../skyewright/local/
    ../skyewright/data/
    ../skyewright/data/layouts/
    ../skyewright/data/doc/
    ../skyewright/data/logs/
    ../skyewright/data/dataset01/
    ../skyewright/local/

There may also be further DataSet folders, e.g.

../skyewright/data/dataset02/

Workstation

On a typical workstation installation of Synergy the folder structure is as follows:

    ../skyewright/programs/
    ../skyewright/local/

About the folders

A little more detail about what is in each folder.

Server or Stand-alone

../skyewright/programs/
This contains the program files - Synergy.exe, SdoEng80.dll, etc.
../skyewright/system/
This contains configuration data that is common to the whole system. The main configuration file is synsys.ini, but there are also further ini files (one per user) plus files matching the wildcard patterns *.eds and *.ss*
../skyewright/data/
This folder and its sub-folders contain the main data and other files, including layouts, documentation and logs.
../skyewright/data/layouts/
This folder is the central store for report layouts. N.B. If you have multiple Datasets and want different layouts in each Dataset it is easy to achieve - just ask.
../skyewright/data/doc/
This folder contains the application's documentation in the form of HTML files.
../skyewright/data/logs/
This folder contains the any activity logs that Synergy has generated plus a few temporary information files such as import logs or check data reports. Synergy automatically maintains this folder, deleting files that appear to be more than 1 day old. If you'd rather hang on to these files longer, the 'hold' period can easily be modified through System Preferences.
../skyewright/data/dataset01/
These are the main Dataset folders, each containing data related to an individual company. Included in these files is one called dataset.ini that contains dataset specific configuration data.
../skyewright/local/
This contains configuration data specific to use of Synergy on the server. This information is contained in a file called synlocal.ini. The file synlocal.ini contains lines that point to the 'system' folder and the 'data' folder, it also contains lines that give the location of Sage and Synergy data for each Dataset.
../skyewright/local/temp/
This contains temporary files generated during the preparation of reports, e.g. preview files.

N.B. Dataset folders can be given names other than Dataset01, Dataset02, etc., so other folder names may exist too.

Workstation

../skyewright/programs/
This contains the program files - Synergy.exe, SdoEng80.dll, etc.
../skyewright/local/
This contains configuration data specific to use of Synergy on the particular workstation. This information is contained in a file called synlocal.ini. The file synlocal.ini contains lines that point from this workstation to the common 'system' and 'data' folders, it also contains lines that point from this workstation to the Sage and Synergy data for each Dataset.
../skyewright/local/temp/
This contains temporary files generated during the preparation of reports, e.g. preview files.
